Do a search with your hex editor for "HWC" and the serial number will be to the left of it. It should be a 12 digit serial number.

If it is the one from the repos the serial number is recognized as explained but will be a text string 12 characters long. This is also explained in the intro on the repos page.

You really need a Raspberry PI for the programmer. It seems all the other programmers have issues with detecting the chips.

Raspberry PI any version will work but I would get the new "Raspberry pi 3" with the new power supply for it. It is 12v 2.5amp which should work quite well for you.
