I've never tried.
Are you trying to gain access to the files?

If you can boot singleuser you can delete the applesetupdone and then reboot and create a new user.

I've never tried that on an encrypted disk

boot to single user mode (boot holding cmd-s)
at the prompt type:
rm /private/var/db/.AppleSetupDone <return>
exit <return>

this should place you at the welcome (setup new user) screen

It will obviously not work when encryption has already been finished... :/

i have personally handled 76 apple computers this year alone, and not ONE of them has been encrypted (-;

that is a gray area in my area of knowledge

I have had a few encrypted , never seems to be a problem. I just erase the drive or SSD in disk utility.

We will be seeing more of this...i think default mode install after El Capitan is file-vault on.

Now i'm not trying to crack the encryption..that would not work !

Yeah possibly. I don't think in our line of work the goal is to preserve data, but to restore the mac to a usable and/or saleable condition.

Is filevault OS based or user based?
